Bidushi Monalisa Ghosh is not only a renowned Odissi dancer but also a teacher, mentor, and cultural ambassador devoted to preserving India’s classical heritage. Trained under legendary gurus, her dance reflects grace, devotion, and spiritual depth. She has performed widely in India and abroad, representing Indian culture on prestigious stages.

Her choreographies focusing on women's empowerment have gained national and international recognition, emphasizing a strong social purpose beyond mere performance. She guides young girls, counsels families against child marriage, and trains youth from financially challenged backgrounds to become future custodians of Indian culture. Through performances, workshops, and lecture demonstrations across continents, she presents classical dance as both a spiritual practice and a path to emotional well-being.

For over three decades, she has shared Odissi across the world, and through her residential Gurukul, Kalajyoti, founded in 2003 in Kolkata, she continues to nurture students from India and abroad in the traditional guru–shishya system. She also teaches refugees and underprivileged communities during her international tours. Her contributions have been recognised by the Ministry of Culture and numerous institutions, affirming her role as both artist and cultural guardian.

Live Wabi Sabi Life features her story as a reminder that perseverance, faith, and passion can transform life’s struggles into strength, and that it is never too late to follow one’s calling.

Her Wabi Sabi Life Story

Monalisa’s journey reflects both artistic dedication and personal resilience. Married young and facing financial strain, household responsibilities, and criticism, she still held firmly to her love for dance. She practiced whenever possible, determined not to lose her identity.

A turning point came when she worked with Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra in a dance drama, performing alongside her young daughter. This opened doors to wider recognition, leading to performances across India and eventually international invitations.

Today, through Kalajyoti and her global work, she continues to teach dance as a path of discipline, healing, and cultural connection, reaching students across countries and communities.

Her Thoughts on Self-Love

For Monalisa, self-love is not an abstract ideal but a quiet inner strength. It is the courage to dream without guilt, the refusal to silence one’s voice, and the ability to stand firm in chaos while remaining rooted in dignity and purpose.

Her Proudest Moment

Among many achievements, one memory stands out deeply, being the only cadet selected to perform the ceremonial Aarti for the Prime Minister of India while leading the Bihar contingent at the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. It was a moment that symbolized both discipline and national pride.

For Monalisa, sharing her story here means honoring both the fractures and the healing. She believes that acknowledging life’s scars is what lights the path forward, offering others hope that resilience can transform struggle into purpose.

Her Biggest Cheerleader

Her brother, sister-in-law, daughter, son-in-law, and her close friends in India and abroad remain her pillars of strength, a reminder that even the strongest journeys are nurtured by love and support.

Her Message to Other Women

She believes that life’s scars and sacrifices are not meant to weaken us, but to shape us into more compassionate, courageous, and loving human beings. Imperfections, she says, are not barriers, they are the foundation of our wisdom.
